As Canada's political landscape grows increasingly tumultuous, a recent wave of dissatisfaction has swept across the country. With polls suggesting that over 80% of Canadians lack confidence in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the pressing question arises: why is he still in power? Many Canadians have begun to scrutinize the role of Jagmeet Singh, leader of the NDP, in propping up the current Liberal government. This situation has sparked a national debate over leadership, accountability, and the state of Canadian democracy.
The NDP-Liberal Partnership: A Double-Edged Sword?
In March 2022, Jagmeet Singh and the NDP struck a formal agreement with the Liberal Party—a supply and confidence deal that allows the Liberals to remain in power until 2025. While Singh touted this agreement as a means to push progressive policies, such as dental care and pharmacare, the practical consequences have left many Canadians disillusioned. Rather than holding the government accountable for its failures, critics argue the NDP has become an enabler of Liberal missteps.
From skyrocketing inflation to an escalating housing crisis, the government’s inability to address core issues has created widespread frustration. Meanwhile, Singh’s unwavering support for Trudeau has put the NDP in a precarious position, as disenchanted Canadians question whether Singh’s leadership aligns with their priorities.
Jagmeet Singh’s Leadership Under the Microscope
Jagmeet Singh once represented a fresh face in Canadian politics—charismatic, energetic, and determined to reshape the NDP. However, his continued alignment with Trudeau’s Liberals has many Canadians asking: Is Jagmeet Singh still fit to lead the NDP?
This question isn’t just rhetorical. The hallmark of strong leadership is the ability to challenge, hold accountable, and demand results. Yet, Singh’s role in keeping the Trudeau government afloat appears to contradict the very principles he claims to represent. By enabling policies that have arguably exacerbated the struggles of ordinary Canadians, Singh has alienated both core NDP supporters and undecided voters looking for real solutions.
Is Canada the Same as It Was?
As a Canadian citizen who was born in Switzerland, raised in Iran, and grew up in Canada after migrating 20 years ago at the age of 16, I saw Canada as a land of opportunity. This was a country where hard work and determination led me to graduate from the engineering school at UBC. Canada was a place where dreams could be realized, and I experienced that firsthand.
Over the years, I pursued careers in engineering and real estate, contributed to the economy by paying taxes, and volunteered to give back to the community. I embraced Canada’s values and opportunities, hoping to be part of a nation that prioritized growth, equality, and prosperity for its citizens.
But today, I ask myself and many others are asking: Is this the same Canada we came to 20 years ago?
The answer is hard to accept. A failed immigration system, a crippling housing crisis, an overwhelmed healthcare system, and an unstable economy are the reality many Canadians face every day. These are not isolated issues—they are the direct result of policies that have failed to deliver on their promises.
Canada was once a beacon of hope and opportunity. Now, it feels like a country struggling to hold onto the very values that made it great.
Isn’t It Time for Change?
At its heart, democracy is about the people—reflecting their will, listening to their concerns, and prioritizing their needs. But when political maneuvering takes precedence over public interest, citizens have every right to demand better.
If Canadians feel neglected, unheard, and dissatisfied with the status quo, they must recognize their power to bring change. Protests, petitions, and active civic engagement are not only democratic rights—they are necessary tools for holding leaders accountable. The continued support of Trudeau by Singh and the NDP calls for a reckoning, not just within the party but across the nation.
What Comes Next?
Canadians face a choice: continue to accept a political partnership that many argue is fueling the current "mess," or demand accountability from leaders who have failed to deliver. Jagmeet Singh and the NDP must decide whether their loyalty lies with Canadians or with Trudeau’s struggling government. For voters, the path forward is clear—make their voices heard, challenge complacency, and insist on leadership that prioritizes the country’s needs over political survival.
As someone who believed in Canada’s promise 20 years ago, pursued education, contributed through careers in engineering and real estate, paid taxes, volunteered, and embraced Canadian values, I can’t help but wonder: Is this still the Canada we dreamed of? If the answer is no, the time to act is now. Canadians deserve leaders who will fight for their future—not protect the failures of the past.
Canada’s democracy depends on it.
